A Man For All Seasons (Robert Bolt) 1962
Robert Bolt’s wonderfully crafted play presents the great dilemma that Thomas More faced as Lord Chancellor of England when King Henry VIII wanted an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The Pope would not nullify the marriage. So, Henry started the Church of England with himself as head to nullify the marriage. This is a great story of a man who stood for his beliefs. For his willingness to be put to death rather than renounce his allegiance to the Catholic Church, Thomas More became a martyr and eventually a saint. The 1966 movie based on this morality play is also excellent and received several Academy awards. Rating: A.
