The Wolves Chronicles (Joan Aiken)
I recently read the 1st two books in Joan Aiken's Wolves Chronicles to my son, Sam.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (1962) -- In this first book Bonnie and her cousin Sylvia are left in the care of the wicked governess, Miss Slighcarp. In this Dickensian-like tale the girls are treated wretchedly when they end up in an orphanage and their friend Simon helps them escape. The rest of the story is how they get their home, Willoughby Chase, back from Miss Slighcarp. Aiken's prose is excellent. Rating: B+

Black Hearts in Battersea (1964) -- This is the second book in Aiken's Wolves Chronicles. Simon arrives in London to study painting. He stumbles upon a plot to over throw the good King James. This is a great tale of adventure. Rating: A

The next book in the series is Nightbirds on Nantucket (1966). This series might be better to read when he's a little older. So, we're going to wait to read this 3rd installment.
